The native blacks wandered at will through the bush, hunting the opossum and emu; and, save in the circumstance of the white man having landed in their country, no material change in its aspect had occurred, to restrict their native freedom. Groups of aborigines were frequently to be met, striding along in their natural dignity of motion, the male, as the lord and master, heading the string, his spears towering above his head, and the females, with the load of family belongings, children inclusive, bringing up the rear. Sometimes they were seen simply travelling in single file, leisurely winding their way through the bush, or spread out in open order, hunting the country before them, killing all, from a snake to a kangaroo, which came within reach. The settlers of early days contrived, when opportunities offered, to join parties of natives in their excursions in search of game, and many a stirring anecdote could be told of the pursuit of the kangaroo by blacks and whites in company, the former with spears and the latter with the double gun. As horses were imported, a few of the more adventurous of the colonists took up positions at some distance from the chief settlements, and commenced hunting for the market--the meat for fresh food, which was scarce, and the skins for the tan-yard or exportation. In the month of October, 1838, a young colonist who had invested certain moneys in the purchase of a horse determined upon exploring the country, and, to that end, engaged the services of an ' old hand, ' as he was called, who possessed a nag, and was willing to earn wages by piloting young beginners through the bush.
